Environmental Sanitation is aimed at developing and sustaining a clean, safe and pleasant physical and natural environment in all human settlements and to promote the socio-cultural, economic and physical well-being of all settlements. Access to improved sanitation facilities is critical to the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

Thirteen Communities were selected to benefit from the provision of Digni loo places of convenience supported by Community Water and Sanitation Agency

The project was aimed to have adequate household toilets sufficiently close to their dwellings, to allow them rapid, safe and acceptable access at all times of the day and night.

Hygiene promotion messages and activities to address key behaviours and misconceptions were targeted for all groups in the communities. Thereafter, representatives from all the communities participated in planning, implementation, and monitoring meetings. These later helped in presentations at community durbars.

The key messages at all meetings and durbars were centered on excreta disposal, the use and maintenance of the toilets to be constructed, the provision and use of hand washing with soap or an alternative such as ashes, involvement of all stakeholders in hygiene promotion activities and also act as mechanism for ensuring sustainability.

A maximum of 20 people to use each toilet was discussed, where the number of people in a household was more than twenty (20), two (2) digni loo toilets were recommended. We also ensured that toilets are sited close enough to the dwellings and are used in the most hygienic way. Particular attention was given to the disposal of children’s faeces, which are commonly more dangerous than those of adults, as the level of excreta-related infection among children is frequently higher and children lack antibodies. Parents or care givers were given information about safe disposal of infant faeces.

All Thirteen communities that benefited from the intervention are all declared as Open Defecation communities
