Asikasu Forest Reserve

Asikasu Forest Reserve is named after River Asikasu which drains the area. It lies within the sunyani forest district. It is located in the Bono Region of Ghana and lies west of Sunyani – Mim Road through Atronie (about 19.3 km south west of Sunyani). The Reserve lies between latitudes 7° 8' 54.0" N and longitudes 2° 31' 1.0" W. The Southern portion of the Reserve is bounded by Bia Tano Forest Reserve (9.8 km) whiles the North-Eastern end (19.2km) is bounded by Amama Shelterbelt Forest Reserve.

The topography of the reserve area is described as a highly dissected plateau, the reserve falls within the moist semi-deciduous forest. The topography of the Reserve is described as highly dissected plateau, with an average altitude of 260 m and forms part of the watershed of Bia and Tano. A crescent – shaped ridge runs across the Reserve from North to South connecting three knoll forms, thus forming the watershed for the streams taking their source from the Reserve. To the east of the main ridge and separated from it by wide valleys are two more knolls with the Suafe Hills being more conspicuous (over 381 m above sea level).

The Reserve covers an area of 269.36 km2 (26,936 ha) with a total external perimeter of approximately 71.28 km and internal perimeter of 1.05 km. The Reserve is under the management of the Sunyani Forest District, however, in terms of political administration, it is under the jurisdiction of the Sunyani and Dormaa Municipalities and the Asutifi District Assembly. The boundaries of the Reserve were pillared during reservation at approximately every 800 m intervals and at every major change in direction. There are two admitted farms in the Reserve namely; Farms 1 and Farm 3 which were demarcated at the time of reservation. The reserve has very interesting sight to visit; the elephant pool, the Suafe Hill and the Apomasu shrine which is the sacred place shrine for the people of Atronie and Ntotroso.

Merchantable timber species such as the Odum, Sapele, Wawa, Chenchen, Esa with diameters as large as 150 cm can all be found in this forest. Fauna species also include antelopes, grasscutters, rats and deer.
